What is the NJ Parenting Education Program?

When parents in New Jersey make the decision to get divorced, the entire family will feel the impacts of this tumultuous time. Any time children are involved in a couple’s divorce, there is an added level of difficulty and emotions that may have lifelong impacts on the children. In most cases, either the parents or the court will have to come up with a custody arrangement that can allow the children to maintain a meaningful relationship with both of the parents.

New Jersey law also requires that the parents attend a Parenting Education Program. The purpose of this program is to help parents work together on matters pertaining to their children after the divorce is finalized. Typically, both parents are required to attend the program but may do so separately. The program addresses a wide variety of topics, some of which include the following:

• The parents’ financial responsibilities for the children after the divorce
• The psychological impacts of divorce on children and how to help them cope
• Helping the child adjust to the new way of life after the divorce
• How the parents can ensure their behavior does not inflict additional emotional strain on the children
